Artist in the Classroom Program
Grade 1 - Miro Project
This lesson has the students explore the use of shapes.
They trace their hands over and over again on a sheet of
8 x 10 white paper, overlapping and even running them off
the page. They will use pencil crayons to fill each hand and
background in with colorful and interesting designs using
various types of line. The colourful works of Joan Miro will
be used to illustrate the use of primary colours and organic
lines.

Curriculum Requirements
Elements of Design
1.  Focus on primary colours (red, yellow, blue) and light
and dark colour values.  
2.  Exploring various kinds of lines. Jagged, straight, wavy
3.  Discuss the differences between Organic and Geometric
lines and emphasize the  this particular project focuses on   
the use of organic lines.

Materials & Techniques
Coloured pencils will be used in this project.  Student will
be shown a variety of techniques applicable to this medium.
Example – overlapping colours to create new colours and
change tonal vales. Also changes in pressure to create
different levels of colour intensity.

Class participation will be encouraged when discussing the
element of design and the materials and techniques.
Example: “Who can tell me a type of line that you would
include in a picture”?
