Artist in the Classroom Program
Grade 2 -Lichtenstein Project
Students will develop a cartoon character based on facial feature sample
charts. Samples of Roy Lichtenstein’s work will be used to demonstrate
the varied uses of line in his pieces and students will be encouraged to
explore vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines using wide markers in
their work.  The use of secondary colours, which they will create
themselves from primary water colours, will be used to enhance the
cartoon character they create.

Curriculum Requirements
Elements of Design
1.  Students will focus on colour mixing, creating their own secondary
colours ( orange, green & purple)
2. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines will be discussed and their use
will be incorporated into background designs.
3.The function of symmetry in character design will also be explored.

Materials & Techniques
Watercolour paint and thick black markers will be used for the project.
Thick markers will emphasize line. Secondary colours (only) will be
used to bring the students characters to life.

Class participation will be encouraged when discussing the element of
design and the materials and techniques. Example: “What two colours
do we mix together to make green?”
Selected samples from Grade 2 classes at St. Leonards Catholic School in Manotick, Ontario, Canada.
