Artist in the Classroom Program
Grade 4 – Picasso “Morphing”
Project

Students will start with a magazine image of a person or animal.  
Using tracing paper, the student will then use the initial image as a
guide to change or “ morph” there original image into a who new
character. Pablo Picassos portraits will be the focus of a discussion
regarding overlapping shapes and conveying emotional quality with
non-representational images.

Curriculum Requirements
Elements of Design
1. Monochromatic colours will be used in this project.  Tints and
shades will also be discussed and utilized in the project.
2. Overlapping shapes and features will help create a sense of depth.
3. Representational and non-representational work will be discussed.

Materials & Techniques
Students will transfer their pictures onto a sheet of white paper using
a simple transferring technique which will be demonstrated. They
will add colour using coloured pencil. Student will be shown a variety
of techniques applicable to this medium. Example – overlapping
colours to create new colours and change tonal vales. Also changes
in pressure to create different levels of colour intensity. Black lines to
emphasize the edges will be applied with black India ink using paint
brushes and sticks.

Class participation will be encouraged when discussing the element of
design and the materials and techniques. Example: “What colour do
you add to blue to make a tint?”
